dc.description.abstractx | This research investigates the place of design in the capitalist production process after the restructuring that began in the 1970s, emphasising its incorporation into a flexible production regime. Exploratory and qualitative in nature, the study adopts a dialectical-materialist approach and combines historical-comparative methods. Its aim is to understand how design drives the development of the productive forces and underpins the mechanisms of management, control, and exploitation of labour power in flexible capitalism. The study also examines the emergence of new forms of precarisation, exploitation, alienation, and replacement of designers’ labour in a context of accelerated informatization and automation. The findings reveal that, once design becomes a productive force in its own right, it occupies an increasingly strategic role in contemporary value-extraction strategies and in the reproduction of capitalist social relations. Project activity progressively escapes designers’ own control, shifting from designing products to designing consumer profiles, while depreciating the utility of artefacts in favour of capital’s imperatives of valorisation. By reinterpreting Marxist categories through the lens of design practice and diagnosing a practical and theoretical crisis in the field, this dissertation contributes to a critical theory of design. | pt_BR |
